The rise of novel viruses: Are we prepared for the next pandemic?
5 October, 2023 @ 7:00 am - 8:00 pm
This lecture aims to analyze the causes and consequences of emerging viruses and our capability to face future pandemics. It will define what an emerging virus is and its relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, posing the central question of the presentation:
Are we prepared for the next pandemic?
Dr. Solá will explain how emerging viruses arise and spread, analyzing the most recent cases, such as SARS, MERS, Dengue, COVID-19, and especially H5N1 (avian influenza). The measures taken to face the COVID-19 pandemic and their effectiveness will be discussed, reflecting on the lessons learned and preparedness for future pandemics.
Possible strategies to prevent and control future pandemics will also be addressed, including monitoring animal health, research in vaccines and treatments, epidemiological surveillance, and public health system preparedness, citing what measures are being taken concerning the possible threat of H5N1.
In summary, the presentation will address the issue of emerging viruses and the need to be prepared for future pandemics, covering everything from their origin and spread to possible strategies to prevent and control their propagation, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and collective action.
