Best Young Researcher

Dr. Biola M. Javierre Martínez

Josep Carreras – Leukemia Research Institute

For her specialization in the study of genetically complex diseases, particularly autoimmune disorders and blood cancers, from an epigenetic perspective.

Biola M. Javierre is the recipient of the Best Young Researcher Award for her outstanding contribution to understanding genomic architecture and its impact on cancer biology, with an innovative focus on B cells and leukemias.

A PhD graduate from the CNIO and leader of the Normal and Malignant Hematopoiesis Research Group at the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute (IJC), Dr. Javierre has developed pioneering tools such as Promoter Capture Hi-C (PCHi-C) and liCHi-C. These tools are fundamental for unraveling the spatial organization of the genome and its relationship with complex genetic diseases. Her research combines cutting-edge omics strategies, genome editing, and experimentation with murine models to explore B cell differentiation, tumor heterogeneity in leukemias, and the microenvironment associated with relapse.

With 37 scientific publications, an h-index of 25, and over 4,000 citations, her work has been featured in high-impact journals such as Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, and Cell. Her leadership is evident in her ability to secure competitive funding, managing nearly €4 million in recent years, and her involvement in international initiatives like L’Oréal-UNESCO, where she was recognized as an International Rising Talent in 2019.

Additionally, Dr. Javierre mentors more than 20 PhD and postdoctoral students, teaches in the Master’s Program in Biomedicine at the University of Barcelona, and actively participates in academic committees and gender equality initiatives. Her work combines scientific excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to education and science communication, establishing her as one of the most promising young researchers on the international stage.
