Dr. Luis Paz-Ares is one of the world’s leading figures in thoracic oncology, widely recognized for his decisive contributions to the understanding and treatment of lung cancer. He is Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid and Director of the Lung Cancer Unit at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), where he has combined clinical excellence, translational research, and institutional leadership.
A Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and former President of ASEICA, he has served on scientific committees of IASLC, ASCO, ESMO, and regulatory agencies such as AEMPS and EMA. He has been principal investigator in more than 350 clinical trials, led numerous competitive research projects, and authored over 490 publications in top-tier journals including NEJM, The Lancet, and Nature Medicine, with an h-index above 100. His career also includes patents, scientific entrepreneurship, and multiple awards, establishing him as a defining figure in modern oncology.
Dr. María-Victoria Mateos is Head of the Myeloma and Clinical Trials Unit at the Haematology Department and Professor of Medicine at the University of Salamanca, Spain. As co-coordinator of the Spanish Myeloma Group (GEM), she has led pivotal clinical trials in transplant-ineligible and smoldering myeloma, helping to redefine treatment standards for these patient populations.
She has authored more than 400 papers in international journals and has an H-index above 100, reflecting the global impact of her research. Dr. Mateos has held key roles in major international societies (IMWG, IMS, EHA, ASH, ASCO) and has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Brian Durie, Bart Barlogie and Kyle Lifetime Achievement Awards. Since 2022, she has served as President of the Spanish Society of Haematology, consolidating her leadership in myeloma research and clinical care at both national and international level.
