Atlantis – Between Myth and Reality
8 April @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Plato left us a fascinating story about Atlantis, oscillating between legend and historical reality. It is time to address this matter rationally and through the lens of the scientific method, considering the possibility that what the Athenian philosopher narrated is more than just a product of his imagination.
This event aims to revive the topic of Atlantis, moving away from fanciful speculations with no basis in Plato’s text, and overcoming the academic reluctance to consider the possibility of an objective historical reality.
In the first part of the event, there will be a projection of a 45-minute summary-compendium (TBC) of the documentary series “Atlántica” by Michael Donnellan. This documentary presents evidence suggesting that the remains found on the coast of Cádiz could correspond to the lost city mentioned by Plato. Directed by archaeologist and filmmaker Michael Donnellan, the documentary uses advanced hydrographic technologies such as Multibeam Sonar and LiDAR to explore possible archaeological remains and proposes an innovative perspective on the Athenian philosopher’s account, suggesting it could be more than a mere creation of his imagination.
The roundtable discussion following the screening will feature the documentary’s author, Michael Donnellan, along with philosopher and anthropologist José Orihuela Guerrero. It will be moderated by Manuel Pimentel.
Moderator:
- Manuel Pimentel, editor, writer, and host of Arqueomanía on La2.
Panelists:
- Michael Donnellan, American archaeologist and documentarian, and author of the documentary “Atlántica”.
- José Orihuela, Spanish philosopher and anthropologist, who has led the summer course on Atlantis at the International University of Andalusia.
