Organoids: A Revolution in Biomedical Research Towards Precision Medicine
15 September, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Organoids are three-dimensional structures composed of stem (or “mother”) cells and their progeny, which self-organize, partially reproducing the characteristics of their tissue of origin. For the first time, they allow the indefinite in vitro growth and storage of both normal and tumoral tissues, largely preserving their in vivo characteristics.
The development of organoid technology is revolutionizing biomedical research, opening new applications in pharmacology and clinical practice.
Generating and cultivating organoids is somewhat more complex and expensive than working with immortal cell lines, yet simpler and more practical than using experimental animals, offering numerous advantages over both classic models.
This talk will introduce organoids as an emerging tool in biological and disease research, drug development, and the so-called Precision Medicine or Personalized Medicine. It will review the current issues and limitations of organoid technology, as well as advances and studies aimed at pushing research and disease treatment to a new level of understanding and quality.
